From the Border Town in literature to the Border Town in visuals, this exhibition is a heartfelt tribute and visual exploration of Shen Congwen’s classic novel by artist Li Chen and us. We invite you aboard a ship to sail with us into that enduring “border town”—a place imbued with the spirit of landscape and the radiance of humanity.
Shen Congwen’s “Border Town” is more than a geographical location; it is a spiritual utopia, a homeland for innocence and melancholy. There, you will meet the crystal-clear You River in western Hunan, the creaking ferry, the stilted houses standing in the wind, and, above all, Cuicui’s clear eyes reflecting the stirrings of youth and the undercurrents of fate. Li Chen’s comics deftly capture the poetic flows and quiet sorrows within the texts. Through his strokes, the thrill of first encounters, the resolve of farewells, and the long wait are all condensed into images.
Created in 2007, this series of comics is the result of a three-year process during which the artist traveled seven times to western Hunan. Ultimately, his brushes gave form to a poetic fusion of literature and visual art. These comics are not mere decorations for the text; rather, they extend its meaning visually, expanding its atmosphere through silent imagery. Drawn in pencil on card paper with meticulous lines, the works build up subtle shades of gray. Both the expressions of the characters and the landscapes of western Hunan are rendered in fine detail, revealing a visual sensitivity to the essence of life.
For now, set aside the noise of the day. Let your eyes wander through these images—feel the silence of the white pagoda by the stream, and experience the profound kindness and pain carried in this border town.
May we all embark on this visual journey to Border Town, and sail awhile through its waters and hills.
